Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

How are the band represented?

The singer for the band is presented throughout this video as being lonely and somewhat aggressive towards other people. He is shown to not care about how his actions affect others by the way he continuously walks forward, knocking people without ever looking back. Even when there is a medium close-up of a woman shouting in his face he doesn't pay any notice towards her. This could show that he believes in concentrating only on your future and that any past mistakes should be forgotten. At the end of the video the rest of the band join him to walk in a line across the pavement, showing that they all uphold the same views as the singer has presented during the rest of the video. It could also show that when they are together, nothing can stop them, as nobody tries to walk or bump into them, unlike when it was just the singer, who alone was constantly walking into people. The video ends showing a long shot of the five men walking into the distance before fading out into black. Another representation could be that as he walks, his paces don't match the beat of the music, as they are slightly out of time. This may show that he is out of sinc with the world and the people around him.

What relationship exists between the images and the lyrics in the video?

Throughout the video the singer is shown to sinc the lyrics. There are also other times where the lyrics are matched with actions shown. One time is when the lyrics say "your a slave to money" and a man is seen pushing a washing machine from a shop, showing his job. When the woman standing in front of him shouting, the lyrics state "I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me" this is contrasting as the woman's words are not heard. As the lyrics "And I'm a million different people" he looks into the window of a car seeing his reflection as if he is looking at who he is today.

What relationship exists between the music and images?

The establishing shot of the video shows the singers feet walking right along a pavement, the camera then pans out slightly, revealing a sign that has an arrow pointing left and above the arrow saying "pedestrians". As soon as this arrow is revealed the music starts playing, which could represent a summary of how the singer lives his life, by going the wrong way.
